2014 Volvo V60

The 2014 Volvo V60 is a five-door, midsize station wagon based on Volvo’s S60 sedan. On sale in Europe since 2011, the V60 is now coming to the U.S. to bolster Volvo’s lineup. Powertrain specs are unknown, but we think it will offer the same engines as the S60. That means a 250-horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder in the base-level V60 T5, with standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. The V60 T6 will have a 300-hp turbocharged six-cylinder and standard all-wheel drive. Reportedly, a plug-in hybrid is also coming, which would be Volvo’s first-ever hybrid.

Pricing isn’t official, but we expect the 2014 Volvo V60 to be slightly more expensive than the S60. The S60 T5 starts around $32,500, while the T6 starts around $41,000. Pricing for the V60 plug-in hybrid is unknown. The V60 should arrive early next year; the plug-in hybrid should come soon after.

To create the 2014 Volvo V60, Volvo took its S60 sedan and added more room in back. That means the 2014 V60 retains all of the S60’s virtues  like its comfortable seats and great engines  and adds more cargo space. Shoppers who don’t need all-wheel drive can get by with the V60 T5, while drivers looking for muscular power will enjoy the 300-hp V60 T6 AWD. The V60 will also likely include the S60’s standard features, meaning items like Volvo’s City Safety braking system and WHIPS whiplash protection front headrests will come at no charge. Shoppers looking at luxury sedans who could use a little extra space might want to consider the V60.

Acura TSX Sport Wagon: A five-door TSX Sport Wagon joined Acura’s lineup for the 2012 model year. It starts around $32,000, making it the cheapest upscale wagon available. But its 201-hp 4-cylinder may leave enthusiast drivers wanting more.

Audi Allroad: The new Audi allroad boasts increased ground clearance over the previous A4 Avant. With standard all-wheel drive, it’s a direct competitor to small crossovers and the V60. Its only drawback is a price that starts above $40,000.

BMW 3-Series Wagon: A wagon bodystyle joins the popular 3-Series lineup this year. With rear or available all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 4-cylinder, the 3-Series wagon will be one of the V60’s sportiest rivals.

Used Mercedes E350 Wagon: The E350 wagon is larger than the V60 and comes with standard all-wheel drive. With 302hp, it’s also more powerful  even compared to the V60 T6. But with a starting price of more than $58,000, a certified pre-owned model is a better match for the V60…

2014 Volkswagen Golf Variant

In 2013 Volkswagen is introducing a new Golf variant. Somewhat confusingly, this new Golf variant is actually called the 2014 VW Golf Variant. It is the latest version of the Volkswagen Golf wagon, better known to us Americans as the Jetta Sportwagen, and it’s just been introduced today at the Geneva Motor Show with three diesel powertrains and 4Motion all-wheel drive. From the B-pillars forward, the new Golf wagon is identical to the new Mk VII 2014 VW Golf hatch, but everything beyond is unique.

It makes sense, considering that the wagon is just over a foot longer than the hatchback. Signature Golf cues, like the “arched-bow” D-pillar remain, as does the hatchback’s cheat-line, which is continued aft of the C-pillar on the wagon. In back, the Golf Variant has a bespoke hatch with unique taillights, and a license plate holder that’s integrated into the tailgate instead of the bumper. Roof rails and a spoiler complete the wagon’s look.

Size-wise, the 2014 Volkswagen Golf Variant is just a touch bigger than the outgoing Jetta Sportwagen. The wagon’s wheelbase has grown from 101.5 inches to 103.8 and its overall length has grown a hair from 179.4 inches to 179.6 inches. Despite the modest size increase, VW says the new Golf wagon is 232 lbs. lighter than the outgoing wagon –mostly thanks to VW’s new MQB platform. Powering the Golf Variant is the usual assortment of gas and TDI diesel engines. On the gas side, VW will offer 1.2 liter and 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4s. The 1.2-liter range includes 84-, 89-, and 104-hp units, while the 1.4-liter range includes 120- and 138-hp engines.

On the diesel front, VW will be offering a 1.6-liter 104- or 108-hp turbodiesel I-4, or a larger 2.0-liter 148-hp turbodiesel I-4. For the first time ever, VW will offer auto journalist specials of the new wagon with diesel and all-wheel drive. Further cementing the station wagon’s niche status will be the Golf Variant 4Motion, which comes exclusively with the 104- and 148-hp TDI engines. Transmission options on the lineup include five- and six-speed manuals, as well as VW’s six-speed dual-clutch DSG box. A CNG-powered Golf Variant is in the works. All Golf wagons come standard with stop-start.

Volkswagen will be offering an ultra-fuel efficient version of its new wagon dubbed the 2014 Volkswagen Golf Variant TDI BlueMotion. Using the 108-hp diesel engine, the wagon comes with a six-speed manual, a 0.6-inch lower ride height, active grille shutters, aero-flaps on the rear windows, extra under-body cladding, and low-rolling resistance rubber. VW expects the new BlueMotion wagon to net 71.3 mpg combined on the European test cycle. Though exterior dimensions for all intents and purposes are basically identical to the Jetta Sportwagen, inside VW is touting dramatic cargo room increases in the new Golf wagon. Cargo area with the rear seats up has reportedly been increased by 20 percent, while space has increased nine percent with the rear seats folded flat.

As is the case with the new Golf hatch, the Golf wagon is available with high-tech extras like Dynamic Chassis Control, a variety of infotainment systems, and park assist. VW’s put a big emphasis on safety with its new wagon, and will be offering systems like its City Emergency Braking, and Driver Alert. The Golf Variant will also be available with PreCrash, which automatically pre-tensions the driver and passenger’s seatbelts if it detects a potential accident. The system will also detect if severe oversteer or understeer is occurring and then close the sunroof and roll the side windows almost all the way up so the side-impact airbags are most effective.

The wagon also has Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which will bring the car to a standstill after an accident. The 2014 Volkswagen Golf Variant wagon goes on sale in Europe this August. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for the Golf wagon to make it here to the U.S., given that the 2014 Golf that it’s based on won’t reach our shores until early next year. When the latest Golf variant makes its way across the Atlantic sometime in end 2014 – early 2015, expect fewer engine options, minor content changes, and Jetta Sportwagen badging. One can only hope that the Variant will make it here with all-wheel drive and a manual transmissions, preferably in brown – us auto journalists need a new wagon to fawn over…

After launching the sedan version, which has a much calmer design, Honda is, one might say, with much success, engaged in the metamorphosis of the hatchback-sedan. The car was developed in Europe and is primarily geared towards the tastes and demands of European customers, a concept that was unveiled in March at the Motor Show in Geneva was not significantly altered.

As it usually happens, thrown out some details that were intended to make the concept more attractive, but more expensive production car production. For example, the LED lights were replaced with conventional headlamps, while LED daytime running lights kept the technology, but in a more modest form. The wheels are smaller, and the rear roof spoiler significantly reduced. Instead of the rear diffuser that emphasized sporty temperament of the concept, there is now a classic shaped bumper.

2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon

Ford is getting back into the minivan game. That may sound surprising, considering the steady decline in the once-huge segment. But the Detroit maker’s strategy reflects its general shift to sharing products on a global scale, rather than designing them for one market alone.

Following the example of the small Fiesta and Focus models, Ford turned to its European design studio for the new Transit Connect Wagon, a people-mover sold on the other side of the Atlantic as the Tourneo. Whether you prefer to call it a wagon, people-mover or 7-seater, it’s much more minivan-like than the current Ford Flex, notably including the classic sliding doors that enhance flexibility when it comes to loading up the local Little League.

The Transit Connect Wagon, as the name implies, is a personal use version of the Transit Connect van that has proved surprisingly popular with fleet and business customers. Both models are completely updated for the new model-year.

The Transit Connect Wagon will be offered with a choice of two powertrain options, a 2.5-liter inline-four; or a 1.6-liter EcoBoost I4 that is expected to deliver better than 30 mpg on the highway, making it the minivan segment leader in fuel economy.

The Transit Connect Wagon will be available in both short, five-passenger and extended wheelbase seven-passenger configurations. Ford says payload capacity will be up to 1,200 pounds with a maximum 100 cubic feet of cargo space. Towing capacity will max out at 2,000 pounds, which is 500 more, notes Ford, than a four-cylinder Toyota Highlander.

Optional features will include large, panoramic glass roof, rearview camera, Sync infotainment system and onboard navigation. As for safety technology, there will be the usual, federally mandated brake-based systems such as ABS and electronic stability control while, Ford notes, it will also feature first-row frontal, pelvis and side airbags, with first-, second- and third-row side curtain airbags in long-wheelbase models. Short-wheelbase versions get first- and second-row side curtain airbags.

Minivans have had a meteoric rise and fall over the past three decades, but despite being fodder for comedians, there’s still a solid core of buyers who love the flexibility they offer. Recently, the list of offerings has plunged along with minivan segment sales. Ford, in particular, abandoned its last true minivan, the Freestar in 2007, but it’s betting the new Transit Connect Wagon will help it regain momentum.

We expect pricing to start somewhere between $24,000 and $25,000…
