2014 Volkswagen CC

The 2014 VW CC’s connection to the old Passat is most visible in its sophisticated cabin. Soft-touch materials abound, fit and finish is excellent and the overall design is intuitive, flowing and polished. It is the CC’s exterior that will win over most buyers, though. The overall look is one of simple elegance, with details like a relatively low, sloping roofline and sleek lights contributing to the attractive, expensive-seeming mien.

Visually, the car packs a simple, conservative grille and headlamps that bring the overall look more in-line with Volkswagen’s mainstream Passat and Jetta offerings. Bi-Xenon headlights with VW’s Adaptive Front Lighting System and LED taillamps are now standard equipment.

2014 Volvo S80

The 2014 Volvo S80 is the flagship model for the brand, and while it wears a more curvaceous suit of armor than the boxy Volvos of yore, it does so in a more subtle, almost stately, fashion.

That’s especially true from the exterior. Although it has the distinctive Volvo look from the front, and slick, rakish lines from the profile, there are some angles that age the S80’s appearance. Sit it next to its more modern, more flamboyant S60 sport sedan sibling, and the S80 starts to look a little boring. That’s not the case inside, though. The S80’s Swedish interior keeps things simple, and–dare we say–cool, with contrasting materials and the ‘floating’ center stack, which houses the high-end audio system and climate controls. For 2014, the S80 gets new front and rear bumpers, LED day-time running lights, and a larger badge in the middle of the grille.

All the usual luxury-sedan features are offered here, but it’s safety and especially active safety that’s central to the S80 package. Add the available Technology Package, and you get a suite of radar- and camera-related active-safety features including Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control, Distance Alert, and a Lane Departure Warning system.

This year that package also includes a Road Sign Information system as well. Rain-sensor wipers and headlight washers are now included in all 2014 Volvo S80s, and the Personal Car Communicator, a special keyfob system that can report the security status of your vehicle remotely including the capability to detect an intruder in your vehicle have been standard since last year.

The performance-oriented 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six in the all-wheel-drive T6 is an impressive powertrain that can move the S80 quickly; but even with it the S80’s just not that much fun to drive. Factor in a lack of steering feel, and the sense that you’re carrying a lot of heft, and this is a car that definitely feels more agreeable on the highway. Go with the base straight-six and front-wheel drive, and you’ll have a car that feels a little more nimble, if you don’t need the all-weather ability. Again, highway trips are its forte; with the comfortable suspension settings and quiet interior, the S80 devours the miles.

2014 Volkswagen Passat US-Version

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is the first German family sedan designed just for us. American drivers have quickly warmed to this bigger, cheaper Passat, with more models leaving dealer lots than ever before. Built at VW’s shiny new manufacturing plant in Tennessee, the 2014 VW Passat is as American as a German sedan can be, yet it still offers enough of that European character to feel special.

A bit of history is in order. The Passat used to be known as the fancy European alternative to family sedans such as the Accord and Camry. If it felt more expensive from behind the wheel, that’s because it was, costing much more to buy and own than comparably equipped rivals. Volkswagen realized that savvy American consumers weren’t in the mood to pay a premium, so they aimed for the heart of the market this time around. Judging by the results, we’d say they nailed the target.

We especially like the unusual diesel-powered Passat TDI, which delivers great fuel economy and surprising punch, but the new-for-2014 1.8-liter turbo engine is certainly an appealing choice on the gas-powered side. Other family sedans may be flashier, but the Passat provides one of the best all-around combinations of performance, features and value.

The 2014 VW Passat gets a new 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in place of the old 2.5-liter 5-cylinder. It also boasts a new Sport trim and available VW Car-Net telematics.

All Passats employ a front-wheel-drive layout. The base engine for 2014 is a 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. With the standard 5-speed manual transmission, it returns 24 miles per gallon city/35 mpg hwy, while the available 6-speed automatic is virtually the same at 24 mpg city/34 mpg hwy.

The Passat TDI features a turbodiesel 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual. Output checks in at 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Audible diesel clatter is kept to a minimum, and fuel economy is stellar at 31 mpg city/43 mpg hwy with the manual and 30 mpg city/40 mpg hwy with the dual-clutch automatic.

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat V6 packs a 3.6-liter V6 engine that cranks out 280 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, transforming the Passat into an under-the-radar muscle car. The transmission is the dual-clutch automated manual, a surprisingly sporty choice. Fuel economy is another pleasant surprise: 20 mpg city/28 mpg hwy is fairly frugal for such a strong motor.
