2014 Nissan Rogue

At the Frankfurt Auto Show Nissan pulled the covers off a all-new compact crossover 2014 Nissan Rogue. Though they’re sold under different names in Europe, the autos are what we will come to know in United States as the 2014 Nissan Rogue. The fresh 2014 Rogue will come at traders this November, with a starting price just above $23,000. It promises not only new styling, a lot of features, and a greater array of selections for family customers, it will too be slightly more fuel efficient.

The well-known 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) found in the previous Rogue make a return for the 2nd generation. The engine is again rated at 170 HP, while Nissan says the 175 lb-ft of torque is higher than the specs for competing autos. EPA fuel economy ratings are expected to rise about 10 percent, to an estimated 28 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway). Those ratings compare to 25 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway) for the current Rogue model. The numbers will fall, of course, if optional all-wheel drive is fitted. The current Rogue with AWD is rated at 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway).

A hybrid version, probably coming as the 2015 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, should improve on those figures somewhat more. The Rogue’s styling is very much in line with the latest Nissan design language found on new models of the last few years, complete with swoopy side accents, a rising window line, and LED running lights. The wheels are 17 inches as standard, with a top-of-the-line Rogue model offering 18-inch alloy wheels.

A new function called Active Ride Control compensates for bumps in the road by minutely adjusting the engine and CVT to smooth the Rogue’s body motions for a smoother ride. Active Trace Control can adjust the torque to inside drive wheels or brake individual wheels slightly to improve safe cornering. Among the family-friendly changes inside the 2014 Rogue: more flexible seating and an optional third-row seat (a first for the Rogue).

Testing the new Rogue at the Nissan 360 event in California a few weeks ago, we found that adults could actually with considerable effort insert themselves into the third-row seat. That said, it’s really just for small children: The seat and back cushions are remarkably thin so they can fold away and there’s precious little headroom to boot. The second seat slides back and forth, so with negotiation, third-row passengers can claim adequate legroom.

The 2014 Nissan Rogue is still among the smaller compact crossovers, but the doors open more widely and the new model is more than an inch taller. There’s also a cargo organizer system for the load bay that offers a mind-numbing 18 different configurations for stowing bags, cartons, soft items, and all the other stuff that families find themselves carting around.

2014 Volkswagen Touareg

The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg is coming soon to USA dealership. While there aren’t many details released yet about the next Touareg, we can make some pretty good guesses based on where the rest of the Volkswagen line is headed and where the automaker is investing time and money on research and development.

Volkswagen has been quite tight lipped about any new developments concerning the 2014 Touareg. They have, however, announced another special edition model that will likely debut only a few months before the next version. The Touareg Edition X, which commemorates the SUV’s ten years of production, will be released in mid-2013. This special edition vehicle will sport a lot of top-end features like bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and more. The Edition X model will be powered by a turbodiesel V6 TDI BlueMotion engine.

While it is uncertain whether or not the 2014 Touareg will make it to the United States, it may nevertheless signal some changes to come. Volkswagen has launched an aggressive campaign to promote their clean and efficient turbodiesel engines, and we wonder if this may signal an expansion of available TDI models in their lineup. Turbodiesel powerplants can be as much as 18% more efficient than similarly powered gas engines, and they produce and impressive amount of torque for their size. We may see Volkswagen further emphasize TDI clean diesel versions of the Touareg. The only current diesel option is the V6 TDI — will VW add a fuel-saving smaller four-cylinder?

Another interesting development that probably won’t show up next year is a diesel hybrid. Volkswagen has been developing this type of powertrain, but production looks to still be a few years off. As it stands, expect the gas-hybrid, diesel, and regular gas powertrains to be the options available.

Also being speculated about in the near future are additional Volkswagen crossover vehicles, which may fit under the Touareg and above the Tiguan in the VW lineup. The vehicle is due for a generational refresh in 2014, at which point we may see a totally new Touareg. Since the upcoming 2014 model may be the last Touareg before a generation switch-over, we expect most of the interior and aesthetic features to remain more or less unchanged…
